In December 2014, we flew up to Queensland to meet the team at RSPCA Wacol, which is the biggest animal shelter in the southern hemisphere. This was one of the projects that truly excited us about the potential iBeacon has in the physical world.
We deployed over 50 beacons onsite to assist potential animal adopters navigate within the well-designed shelter and find the animal they’re looking for.
Upon talking to the friendly crew at RSPCA and potential animal adopters, we identified a few problems that can be solved by having iBeacons, including:
- Visitor browses for animals at home but doesn’t know where to find them when they’re at the RSPCA campus/shelter
- Visitor does not know if there are similar dogs at the shelter to the dog currently in front of them.
All the data relating to each of the animals already exist in the popular animal shelter cloud software developed by Shelter Buddy. Beaconmaker utilised the existing APIs and consumed it so that it runs perfectly on the Beaconmaker CMS to power the mobile app.
